My Experience with Ragging at IIT Bombay: A Safe Haven for All Students

Introduction

Since I have just completed my first year at IIT Bombay, I can confidently say that your chances of being asked for your opinion by the President of the USA are far greater than facing ragging at IITB.

IITB has created a safe community for students from all backgrounds, regardless of gender, caste, religious background, or age group. It can be assumed as the poster child for a perfect place with no discrimination against anyone.

A Safe and Discrimination-Free Environment

One of the many factors contributing to this is the strict rules that are in place. I have seen people getting expelled from IITB if caught ragging. Don’t worry, just study hard enough to get into this prestigious institution, and your life will be set!

The Ragging Ban and Its Indications

When I first got into college, a reputed ragging ban was strictly established. However, seniors told us that it still happened until the last year. I didn’t face any ragging myself, but one of my classmates did.

It was during our second year when we became friends with our seniors, but some seniors still treated us rudely. On one particular day, we overheard a boy, let's call him X, being ragged by seniors with his own consent. Initially, we were shocked, but then we discovered that it was a forced consent. X had been staying in the hostel from his childhood and had already faced the extent of ragging, so the seniors didn't have to put too much effort into it.

A Boy's Plight with Ragging

X seemed relatively cool about it at first, but then the seniors tried to humiliate him more. They imposed a rule on him to stay completely naked in the hostel. X tried to negotiate this but the seniors did not agree. He endured the humiliation because he had to be naked in front of us when we were clothed, which made him feel even more humiliated. In his previous hostels, his friends were also naked with him, but now he couldn’t refuse because the seniors had his consent and had his naked photos and videos.

The seniors made X stay naked all the time, and no one talked to him much, except when they wanted to make fun of him. The seniors took things even further by doing even more disgusting stuff, like making X pee in their mouths or masturbating on him. X said he had faced all this earlier, but he was not as cool about it as he pretended to be. To humiliate him even more, the seniors took him naked in front of first-year juniors, which meant the situation had escalated.

We also noticed that some seniors secretly entered X’s room at night, indicating that the ragging had gone on a much greater level. This was a saddening and eye-opening experience, but it highlighted the strict measures IITB takes to ensure a safe and respectful environment for its students.

Conclusion

While ragging does happen, its incidence is very low because of the strict policies in place. IITB is committed to creating a safe community for all students, and while it’s important to be aware of the potential for such incidents, it’s more likely that you will have a fulfilling and successful academic experience at this prestigious institution. So, focus on your studies, and your life will be set!
