Does a Profitable Tech Startup Really Need Investors?
Is this an honest question? How can any of us know?
Only about 1% of startups get investors, and that's the reality. But that's just me playing the odds. Do you really need one?
Why Do You Need Investors?
The answer depends on your goals and aspirations. If your startup is profitable, you might not need them, but if you see room for growth, you might.
Two Questions to Ask
If there's a potential for growth, you can ask yourself these two fundamental questions:
Are you satisfied with the current pace of growth? Does your current trajectory seem likely to result in substantial financial rewards soon? Do you desire faster growth? Are you ready to share your company to achieve this growth?Investments are primarily for rapid expansion. If your goal is to grow, then sell, and move on to the next venture, then investments might be beneficial. However, if your startup is a personal venture and you wish to keep it as your primary focus, it might be better to avoid investments.
Reasons for Seeking Investors
Investors typically contribute capital, but that's not always necessary. If your startup doesn't need additional cash, there's no need for investors. However, here are some scenarios where raising capital would be beneficial:
You need a larger pool of working capital. Your days of inventory and accounts receivable exceed your days of accounts payable. You need to invest in new assets, such as production equipment, more inventory, land, office, or research and development. You wish to hire additional staff to expand into new markets or grow your business. You want to make aggressive investments to grow rapidly. The alternative to investors is to take out loans, but if you don't have the cash flow to regularly pay interest expenses, loans may not be an option. With investors, you can receive money without the obligation to regularly repay it. However, the downside is that investors will own a portion of your company.
Starting without Investors
To start with, avoid taking on investors. Start with small projects or freelance work. Initially, you need full freedom to try your idea and business model, and investments should primarily be for growth.
Conclusion
Deciding whether a startup needs investors depends on several factors, including your growth aspirations and financial needs. Starting small and gradually building your business can provide valuable experience and insights before seeking external funding.
